Fast Food, 'Child Abuse'? British Politician Chris Brewis Says Yes
British politician Chris Brewis, an independent councilor in Lincolnshire, recently took to BBC Radio to issue a harsh takedown of parents who allow their children to eat fast food, comparing the dietary stance to "child abuse." Brewis argued that because the consumption of fast food increases childrens' risk for obesity and its attendant diseases, such as diabetes, it's negligent of parents to allow their kids to chow down. But his interviewer wasn't willing to let the loaded phrase "child abuse" go unchallenged, so she asked him to clarify his position.
"Obsessive use of fast food and the obesity epidemic -- partly caused by food and partly caused by lifestyle -- means that probably in future years, in twenty years, children having severe health problems or dying before their parents will become commonplace. And we need to tackle it now," Brewis responded. Yet Brewis also said that he didn't think that parents should be barred by law from allowing their children to eat fast food.
"Clearly, there's nothing illegal with fast food or food with excess fat," he said on the radio show. "But we should start to reduce it with small changes. If you go five times a week, go twice. If you go three, go once. If you go seven, go three or four!" Health advocates and politicians have also been concerned about childhood obesity and fast food on our side of the pond. Here, policy interventions have focused on taxes on unhealthy foods and so-called "Happy Meal Bans," which try to stop fast food chains from including toys in meals for kids.

NaturalNews) "Womb to the Tomb" was actually the theme of the national pharmaceutical convention a few years ago. Big Pharma isn't even bashful about wanting all of us on meds before we even get here, and certainly for our whole lives. But one silver lining of the economic downturn is that more and more Americans can't afford health insurance. Combine that with more and more people getting sicker at younger ages, and people are beginning to question what the medical establishment is pushing. They are beginning to see the correlation between bad food, ill health, multiple prescriptions, and these behemoth corporations dictating legislation with the billions they make off of our ill health, and how the whole cycle is perpetuated.
As people begin to question, they hit the internet. They learn about natural, safe, affordable remedies for what ails them as well as logical explanations about what caused it in the first place. With that freedom to educate ourselves, how do the behemoths fight back? On several fronts of course, such as, "if you can't afford your medication we may be able to help" but also, more insidiously, by taking over the dissemination of information to our young people. Raise them steeped in the propaganda, and fewer will question. They also control what your doctor reads and "learns" to further their profit agenda. When people find themselves ill and go to the doctor, the only options they are given are those lined out by the profit-mongering giants. A good investment
All schools need more money, especially schools run on tax dollars. That's how we ended up with that whole fiasco of having Coke machines in elementary schools. Plus, making a "donation" to an educational entity is a tax write off, so its a win-win for pharmaceutical giants to fund research through university programs and medical schools - more researchers for less money, all while becoming the "good guys" to the young population, and then writing it all off. The same is true for paying doctors in cancer clinics. Surgery, radiation, and chemo are big bucks, but so are all the side prescriptions to deal with the symptoms and complications. And, again, a great place to get some research done on trials and experimental treatments. Cancer is a billion dollar-a-year industry. Curing it would put a big hole in the industry.
Last year alone, eight pharmaceutical companies spent more than $220 million on promotional speakers for their products, according to ProPublica.com. This practice has been a trade secret until whistle blower lawsuits recently forced the companies to disclose the information. Doctors are allowed to keep their day jobs while raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars for promoting and talking about new drugs for a specific company. Is it any wonder that those are the drugs they prescribe? This conflict of interest is most surprising for its blatancy. It would never be allowed to that extent, or that openly, amongst law-makers, and that's saying something as few of us hold them up as the ethical pillars of our communities. Now that its public knowledge, many doctors have begun pulling out of these arrangements, and the cos have been cutting back on "promotional spending."
The status quo in medicine will never change as long as the pro-industry propaganda machine rolls on; but with the unique situation of pharmaceutical trials requiring doctors, where is that line into conflict of interest? This is similar to Big Ag and Monsanto taking over research universities to advance research toward more use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and chemically based crop systems. It is the way of our country now - corporate takeover. Folks, the fox is guarding the hen house.
One thing is for sure. Cancer will never be cured, at least not in America. They will make progress, sure, to keep the machine rolling. But, as cancer is the result of something being out of balance in the body, and the pharmaceutically funded medical establishment is only looking for a chemically based cure (think: Guardasil vaccine), the only widespread cure any of us can count on is prevention. It goes on to say: "The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as severe liver and kidney damage. The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group."
The study, led by Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen, was the first ever study to examine the long-term (lifetime) effects of eating GMOs. You may find yourself thinking it is absolutely astonishing that no such studies were ever conducted before GM corn was approved for widespread use by the USDA and FDA, but such is the power of corporate lobbying and corporate greed. The study was published in The Food & Chemical Toxicology Journal and was just presented at a news conference in London.
Findings from the study Here are some of the shocking findings from the study: • Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature death. • Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large tumors. • Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe organic damage including liver damage and kidney damage. • The study fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GM corn that's grown across North America and widely fed to animals and humans. This is the same corn that's in your corn-based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas and corn snack chips. The Daily Mail is reporting on some of the reaction to the findings: France's Jose Bove, vice-chairman of the European Parliament's commission for agriculture and known as a fierce opponent of GM, called for an immediate suspension of all EU cultivation and import authorisations of GM crops. 'This study finally shows we are right and that it is urgent to quickly review all GMO evaluation processes,' he said in a statement. 'National and European food security agencies must carry out new studies financed by public funding to guarantee healthy food for European consumers.' Our analysis clearly reveals for the 3 GMOs new side effects linked with GM maize consumption, which were sex- and often dose-dependent. Effects were mostly associated with the kidney and liver, the dietary detoxifying organs, although different between the 3 GMOs. Other effects were also noticed in the heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system. We conclude that these data highlight signs of hepatorenal toxicity, possibly due to the new pesticides specific to each GM corn. In addition, unintended direct or indirect metabolic consequences of the genetic modification cannot be excluded. Here are some quotes from the researchers: "This research shows an extraordinary number of tumors developing earlier and more aggressively - particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts." - Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist, King's College London. "We can expect that the consumption of GM maize and the herbicide Roundup, impacts seriously on human health." - Dr Antoniou. "This is the first time that a long-term animal feeding trial has examined the impact of feeding GM corn or the herbicide Roundup, or a combination of both and the results are extremely serious. In the male rats, there was liver and kidney disorders, including tumors and even more worryingly, in the female rats, there were mammary tumors at a level which is extremely concerning; up to 80 percent of the female rats had mammary tumors by the end of the trial." - Patrick Holden, Director, Sustainable Food Trust.

In late July, pro-labeling groups obtained a flier sent out by a group opposed to the proposition containing the endorsements of three Democratic California Assemblymembers, even though the Democratic Party of California (and over 90 percent of consumers) supports GMO labeling. The group that ran the flier is "No on 37: Coalition Against the Deceptive Food Labeling Scheme, Sponsored by Farmers and Food Producers," formerly known as "Coalition Against the Costly Food Labeling Proposition." "No on 37" receives major funding from the Council for Biotechnology Information (CBI) and Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), both front groups for the "Big 6" pesticide and genetic engineering companies: Monsanto, Dow Chemical, Syngenta, Bayer, Dupont, and BASF. The flier proudly bears the endorsements of Assemblymembers Henry Perea, Manuel Perez, and Alexandra Rooker, the Vice-Chair of the California Democratic Party. This despite the California Democratic Party announcing its endorsement for Prop 37 on Monday. "No on 37" Flier Paid for by "No on 37: Coalition Against the Deceptive Food Labeling Scheme"
A search of Monsanto's website reveals that the corporation contributed $1,500 to Assemblymember Perea's reelection fund in April of this year. Perea is running unopposed. The "Big 6" front groups CBI and GMA, as well as Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Nestle, Cargill, Conagra, and other big food corporations, have collectively donated more than a million dollars to efforts to oppose the California GMO labeling proposition. As CMD guest contributor Michele Simon reported, fighting GMO labeling is the food lobby's "highest priority." Talk about "special interests."
"No on Prop 37" flier distributed at the California Democratic Party 7/29/12The largest contributions to "No on 37" came from several of the "Big 6": Pioneer Hi Bred, a subsidiary of Dupont, gave $310,000; BASF Plant Science gave $126,000; Syngenta gave $63,300; their Washington-based lobbying powerhouse Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) gave $250,000 (BIO is funded by a long list of agrichemical cos including Monsanto); and GMA gave $125,000.
Responding to the release of these numbers by the CASecretary of State on Tues. Marcia Ishii-Eiteman, PhD, senior scientist at PANNA, said, "Much of the rest of the world -- including Japan, Australia, the European Union and China -- already requires genetically engineered foods to be clearly labeled. But in the U.S., pesticide corporations like Monsanto continue to enjoy unfettered and unlabeled access to the market, and a consumer population that is left largely in the dark." Stacy Malkan, a spokeswoman for the "Yes on 37 Right to Know Campaign," asked, "Why are these giant food cos spending so much money to hide the truth about what's in our food? These same companies are already informing foreign consumers about genetically engineered food in 49 other countries... Californians have a right to know what's in our food, too."
Over 90% of Americans believe they have a "right to know" and support the labeling of GMO foods. In the face of that kind of broad-based popular support, the "Big 6" and their front groups may have their work cut out for them, even if a handful of assemblymembers do team up with Monsanto and endorse the opposition. That's the warning issued today by molecular biologist Jack Heinemann of the Univ of Canterbury in Australia. Heinemann has published an eye-opening report that details this warning and calls for rigorous scientific testing on animals before this crop is ever consumed by humans. The enzyme suppressor in the wheat, he says, might also attack a human enzyme that produces glycogen. Consumers who eat genetically modified wheat would end up contaminating their bodies with this enzyme-destroying wheat, causing their own livers to be unable to produce glycogen, a hormone molecule that helps the body regulate blood sugar metabolism. This, in turn, would lead to liver failure. "What we found is that the molecules created in this wheat, intended to silence wheat genes, can match human genes, and through ingestion, these molecules can enter human beings and potentially silence our genes," said Heinemann in a press conference on the threat of GM wheat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI7n_caiTvE). "We found over 770 pages of potential matches between these two genes in wheat and the human genome," he continued. "We found over a dozen matches that are extensive and identical, and sufficient to cause silencing in experimental systems. The findings are absolutely assured. There's no doubt that these matches exist. ...from this information, we know that it's plausible there will be an adverse effect and therefore that's why we're calling for a particular battery of experiments to be done before humans eat this wheat."
Professor Judy Carman, biochemist and director of the IHER, Flinders University, Adelaide, added: "If this silences the same sort of gene in us -- as it silences in the wheat -- then, well, children who are born with this enzyme not working tend to die by the age of about five. And adults with this problem, just kind of get more and more sick, and more and more tired, until they get very very ill indeed." She continues, "Before this comes near any human feeding studies, you need to undertake thorough animal safety assessments, where you actually look to see if the animals get sick. So you need to see if this genetic modification survives digestion and gets into the bodies of the animals. You need to see what effect it has on them. You need to do proper long-term toxicology studies... you need to check for cancer, you need to see if there are any reproductive problems, and you need to check for allergies..."
CLARIFICATION: This note was added after initial publication to help clarify the status of GM wheat. Currently, GM wheat is not commercialized. It's not yet found in everyday foods. But the GMO industry is trying to commercialize it while skipping any real safety testing and buying off regulators to declare it safe. GM corn, of course, is already widely used in foods, as is GM soy. But GM wheat is not yet in the food supply. If we don't resist the domination of the biotech industry, however, it soon will be. The industry is down to one last-ditch chemical: colistin, a toxic bug-killing chemical discovered in 1949. It kills superbugs, but it also causes kidney damage. ...There's a lot of that going on in medicine these days, it seems... Nearly all antibiotics are now obsolete In the last 34 years, Big Pharma has only come up with two new classes of antibiotics. Both are now obsolete. And the drug companies are walking away from the research needed to produce new antibiotics even as they run television ads claiming they "put patients first." "The company said it was moving the operation to Shanghai. ...Pfizer is struggling to open the Chinese facility and has largely abandoned antibiotics."
It turns out that drugs for erectile dysfunction, baldness or cholesterol are ten times more profitable than antibiotics. So while a wave of drug-resistant bacteria burns through our hospitals, killing patients by the tens of thousands, Big Pharma is far more interested in making sure some middle-aged guy on statin drugs can still get an erection. There are more profits to be had, after all, in giving people boners rather than cures. 99,000 Americans a year killed by superbugs, says CDC Meanwhile, superbugs are killing Americans at a rate that rivals wartime casualties. A decade ago, the CDC estimated that superbugs infected 1.7 million Americans and killed 99,000 Americans each year (http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/nih-superbug-ou...). That's about twice the number of Americans killed in the entire Vietnam War, by the way. And those numbers are a decade old. By many accounts, the superbug problem is far worse now than it was ten years ago. Why are infections getting worse? Because over the last decade, superbugs have evolved. Even Dr. Margaret Chan, the director general of the World Health Organization, couldn't deny the reality of the situation. Many other pathogens are developing resistance to multiple drugs, some to nearly all. Hospitals have become hotbeds for highly-resistant pathogens, like MRSA, ESBL, and CPE, increasing the risk that hospitalization kills instead of cures. These are end-of-the-road pathogens that are resistant to last-line antimicrobials. If current trends continue unabated, the future is easy to predict. Some experts say we are moving back to the pre-antibiotic era. No. This will be a post-antibiotic era. In terms of new replacement antibiotics, the pipeline is virtually dry, especially for gram-negative bacteria. The cupboard is nearly bare. Prospects for turning this situation around look dim. A post-antibiotic era means, in effect, an end to modern medicine as we know it. The end of modern medicine is also the failure of modern medicine Let's face it: Modern medicine has failed humanity. While promising cures, the drug industry only delivers skyrocketing rates of superbug infections, chemical intoxication and autism. Chemotherapy causes permanent brain damage. Vaccines cause permanent kidney damage and spontaneous abortions. Painkillers have created a new generation of prescription drug junkies while antibiotics breed deadly microbes that threaten us all. Every time the drug industry claims to have solved one problem it creates two more.
Rather than the industry being guided by improved patient outcomes, it is wholly guided by the endless quest for corporate profits. This has led to an abandonment of real science and real medicine. A billion victims of an industry that has failed at every level: Economically, socially, ethically and spiritually. Big Pharma is, essentially, the Big Failure of our time.
