Fed lent banks nearly $8 trillion during crisis

Fed lent banks nearly $8 trillion during crisis, report shows

While the nation's largest banks were publicly reassuring nervous investors of their stability during the height of the financial crisis, they were also quietly approaching the Federal Reserve, hat in hand. The total price tag: $7.77 trillion, many times the amount of the better-known TARP bailout.

The magnitude of the government's assistance to struggling banks allowed them to grow even bigger and continue paying executives billions in compensation, a report in Bloomberg Markets January issue said Monday.

A win in court against a group representing the banks and a FOIA request filed by Bloomberg LP revealed the extent of the central bank's largesse — as well as the $13 billion in profits banks earned from those bailouts. The so called "big six" — JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley — accounted for $4.8 billion of that total — nearly a quarter of their net income during that time.

Those borrowed trillions were a deeply-buried secret. It appears that even high-ranking Fed officials didn't know about the scale of the handouts. According to Bloomberg, then-president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis Gary H. Stern “wasn’t aware of the magnitude,” and unnamed sources say that even top aides to Treasury Department head Henry Paulson were kept in the dark.

The six biggest banks in the country received a total $160 billion in TARP funds, but as much as $460 billion from the Fed, raising the question as to how and why this nearly $8 trillion in loans, guarantees and limits remained under wraps for so long. According to the Fed, the massive scale of banks' borrowing — and the red ink that prompted it — had to be kept secret to avoid spooking investors and prompting a panic or bank runs that would have had even more devastating consequences on the shaken economy.

The Fed defended its actions back then by contending that the biggest financial institutions in the country were too big to fail — a phrase that has become a bone of contention among lawmakers, some of whom argue that a "too big to fail" bank is one that's too big to exist.

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown sponsored a bill last year that would cap a bank's non-deposit liabilities at 2% of gross domestic product, and crack down on workarounds banks currently use to bypass a 1994 law that prohibits any one bank from holding more than 10 percent of all deposits in the country.

This report is truly DISGUSTING- I am a retired Invesment Banker - & not proud of it !!!

Thanksgiving Conversation Starter: Is It Time to Ban Soda Ads on Prime Time Television?

Thanksgiving Conversation Starter: Is It Time to Ban Soda Ads on Prime Time Television?
Posted: 11/23/11 01:58 PM ET
Did you know Coca-Cola's first television ad aired on Thanksgiving Day in 1950? It was part of a special live production featuring the ventriloquist Edger Bergen and his sidekick Charlie McCarthy? It was a humble foray into the new but powerful advertising medium for the soft drink giant. However, it didn't take long for the co. to realize the power of TV, particularly on younger audiences.
I have to admit few commercials evoke warm holiday memories more than the ubiquitous Coca-Cola ads such as those polar bear commercials. Remember the one that starts with two polar bear cubs struggling to pull a Christmas tree up a snowy hill? After some help from mom (or possibly dad) -- the little ones are rewarded with an ice-cold coke for a job well done. Knowing what I know now about the effects of sugary drinks on children the image of kids chugging down a Coke [or in this case polar bear cubs] evokes the same feelings I'd get if they were taking a deep drag on cigarettes.

Oh give me a break -- it's just a soda, I can hear the comments already. A little soda once in a while is not going to harm anyone. Sadly, many kids are drinking a lot more than just a little bit of soda every day. The statistics are sobering -- Americans suck down about 30% more calories from sugar-sweetened drinks now than they did just 10 years ago. When it comes to children, they're gulping down up to 15% of their total calories for the day from these liquid candies. For teens its worse, soft drinks are the number one source of calories in a their diet. Did you know that a 12-oz can of regular soda can contain as much as 10 and a ½ teaspoons of sugar. That's as much sugar found in two 1 ½ ounce chocolate candy bars.
Those numbers are shocking enough, however, what should give us all pause are the findings from one study that found if a child consumes just one drink filled with added sugar a day his or her chance of becoming obese increases by 60 percent! It's not surprising then that soda consumption is linked to childhood obesity, type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. These facts are fairly well known by now. Groups like Yale's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity have been sounding the alarms for quite sometime. You'd think with all this information, the least soft drink companies could do is cut back on the advertising -- at least those focused on kids. Right? Wrong! According to our friends at the Rudd Center kids are getting bombarded with more and more ads every year. Take a look at their latest findings:
12 OZ Soda sugar amount
Soda Ad Exposure
• From 2008 to 2010, exposure to TV advertising for regular soda doubled for children.
• In 2010, while children saw 50% more ads on TV for sugary fruit drinks, adults saw twice as many ads for 100% juice.
• Capri Sun, Kool-Aid and Sunny D dominated children's exposure to sugary drinks on TV, together comprising 40% of children's total exposure to sugary drinks.
We should all find the fact that food companies are spending so much money on advertising directly to kids -- nearly $2 Billion a year -- truly disturbing. It doesn't sit well with our nation's pediatricians either. In 2006, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement which said exposure to advertising, "may contribute significantly to childhood and adolescent obesity, poor nutrition, and cigarette and alcohol use." According to the AAP, kids and teens view more than 3,000 ads a year, on television alone. They say research has shown, "that young children -- younger than 8 years -- are cognitively and psychologically defenseless against advertising."
Coke and Pepsi have gone even further, aided by spineless show producers, and their networks, by purchasing embedded ads directly into the shows content. The blurred line between the show and the ads pummel young viewers. The average age of an American Idol or X factor fan is 6-12! The beloved judges sip it as they dole out advice to the contestants. Celebrities chug it during the commercial breaks. Hardly seems right, does it. Drs & Smoking - A while Back- Lets STOP Sodas

For a while there it looked like the FTC and several other regulatory agencies, which are part of the so-called Interagency Working Group on Food Marketed to Children, were poised to take a strong stand on the issue. That was until last month when they caved-in to pressure from industry, which complained that the group's original recommended voluntary guidelines designed to limit the way unhealthy foods are sold to children between the ages of 2 and 17 was, "unworkable." Now the working group is thinking of changing the recommended age limits to kids between 2 and 11. Not only that, they're thinking of looking the other way when it comes advertising "seasonal or holiday confections" like Halloween or Easter candy, or at places such as theme parks or sporting events.
When will regulators get a backbone? They have to stop letting industry kick them around and keeping them from protecting the health of America's children? I know I'm not alone in my disgust.
Corporations are no longer allowed to advertise cigarettes on TV due to the potential impact it could have on our kids. When it comes to hard liquor, the government didn't ban it, the companies did it voluntarily. Can you imagine! It is now time to institute a similar TV advertising ban on soda. We are in the midst of a health epidemic. Some one has to start caring. Some food for thought as you sit down and give thanks for our children this holiday season.

Today's Teens Will Die Younger of Heart Disease

Today's Teens Will Die Younger of Heart Disease, Study Finds

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2011) — A new study that takes a complete snapshot of adolescent cardiovascular health in the United States reveals a dismal picture of teens who are likely to die of heart disease at a younger age than adults do today, reports Northwestern Medicine research.
________________________________________
"We are all born with ideal cardiovascular health, but right now we are looking at the loss of that health in youth," said Donald Lloyd-Jones, M.D., chair and associate professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "Their future is bleak."
Lloyd-Jones is the senior investigator of the study presented Nov. 16 at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Orlando.
The effect of this worsening teen health is already being seen in young adults. For the first time, there is an increase in cardiovascular mortality rates in younger adults ages 35 to 44, particularly in women, Lloyd-Jones said.
The alarming health profiles of 5,547 children and adolescents, ages 12 to 19, reveal many have high blood sugar levels, are obese or overweight, have a lousy diet, don't get enough physical activity and even smoke, the new study reports. These youth are a representative sample of 33.1 million U.S. children and adolescents from the 2003 to 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys.
"Cardiovascular disease is a lifelong process," Lloyd-Jones said. "The plaques that kill us in our 40s and 50s start to form in adolescence and young adulthood. These risk factors really matter."
"After four decades of declining deaths from heart disease, we are starting to lose the battle again," Lloyd-Jones added.
The American Heart Association (AHA) defines ideal cardiovascular health as having optimum levels of seven well-established cardiovascular risk factors, noted lead study author Christina Shay, who did the research while she was a postdoctoral fellow in preventive medicine at Northwestern's Feinberg School. Shay now is an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
"What was most alarming about the findings of this study is that zero children or adolescents surveyed met the criteria for ideal cardiovascular health," Shay said. "These data indicate ideal cardiovascular health is being lost as early as, if not earlier than the teenage years."
The study used measurements from the AHA's 2020 Strategic Impact Goals for monitoring cardiovascular health in adolescents and children. Among the findings:
Terrible Diets: All the 12-to-19-year-olds had terrible diets, which, surprisingly, were even worse than those of adults, Lloyd-Jones said. None of their diets met all five criteria for being healthy. Their diets were high in sodium and sugar-sweetened beverages and didn't include enough fruits, vegetables, fiber or lean protein.
"They are eating too much pizza and not enough whole foods prepared inside the home, which is why their sodium is so high and fruit and vegetable content is so low," Lloyd-Jones said.
High Blood Sugar: More than 30 percent of boys and more than 40 percent of girls have elevated blood sugar, putting them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
Overweight or Obese: Thirty-five percent of boys and girls are overweight or obese. "These are startling rates of overweight and obesity, and we know it worsens with age," Lloyd-Jones said. "They are off to a bad start."
Low Physical Activity: Approximately 38 percent of girls had an ideal physical activity level compared to 52 percent of boys.
High Cholesterol: Girls' cholesterol levels were worse than boys'. Only 65 percent of girls met the ideal level compared to 73% of boys.
Smoking: Almost 25% of teens had smoked within the past month of being surveyed.
Blood Pressure: Most boys and girls (92.9 percent and 93.4 percent, respectively) had an ideal level of blood pressure.
The problem won't be easy to fix. "We are much more sedentary and get less physical activity in our daily lives," Lloyd-Jones said. "We eat more processed food, and we get less sleep. It's a cultural phenomenon, and the many pressures on our health are moving in a bad direction. This is a big societal problem we must address."
The research was funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Watermelons lower abdominal fat accumulation and reduce heart-clogging arterial plaque

Watermelons lower abdominal fat accumulation and reduce heart-clogging arterial plaque

Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/034140_watermelons_abdominal_fat.html#ixzz1dnHaUA6C

(NaturalNews) Researchers from the University of Kentucky have demonstrated that consuming watermelon juice can have a significant impact on artery-clogging plaque deposition by modifying blood lipids and lowering dangerous belly fat accumulation. Heart disease takes the lives of millions of unsuspecting individuals each year, and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), leading to a heart attack, is the most common form of the disease. Many different species of melons have been shown to benefit human health and watermelon is no exception. Regular consumption of the red fruit can help manage fat deposition and weight management goals while lowering the risks associated with coronary artery plaque accumulation and heart disease.

Researchers using mice with diet-induced high cholesterol were given supplemental watermelon juice while a control group was fed a typical diet with plain water. After a study period of eight weeks, the animals given watermelon juice had lower body weight than the control group, due to decreased fat mass. They experienced no decrease in lean mass, an important finding: muscle tissue remained viable and weight loss was due to loss of abdominal body fat.
Watermelon Improves Lipid Profile and Fat Accumulation to Lower Heart Disease Risk
Further, the study authors determined that plasma cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower in the supplemented group, with modestly reduced intermediate and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentrations, as compared to the control group. An examination of plaque affected lesion areas found that the watermelon juice group experienced significant reductions in atherogenic plaque lesions and a statistically significant reduction in risk of progressive arterial hardening and heart attack.

Lead investigator, Dr. Sibu Saha concluded "Melons have many health benefits... this pilot study has found three interesting health benefits in mouse model of atherosclerosis. Our ultimate goal is to identify bioactive compounds that would improve human health". Any intervention that can stabilize or slow the growth of arterial plaque will result in a critical lowered risk of atherosclerosis (arterial hardening), the leading form of heart disease.

Like many other fruits and vegetables found in their natural form, watermelons contain powerful carotenoid antioxidant compounds that promote human health and fight disease. Watermelons derive their red color from lycopene, a nutrient well known for its ability to fight colon and prostate cancer. In addition, watermelon consumption is associated with protection against macular degeneration and has been shown to help lower blood pressure and improve insulin signaling. Prior studies have used three cups of watermelon juice or two and a half cups of fruit chunks to provide clinically significant levels of lycopene.

The Bill Clinton Diet and 65th B'Day Party

The Bill Clinton Diet and 65th B'Day Party

Looking considerably thinner than during his days as a McDonald's hamburger-eating President, Bill Clinton was on TV recently with Wolf Blitzer & Dr. Sanjay Gupta to rave about the benefits of a vegan diet. Citing Dr. T. Colin Campbell, author of the bestseller The China Study, and Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease,
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/podcasts/gupta/site/2011/08/29/sgmd.last.heart.attack.cnn
and Dr. Dean Ornish creator of Medicare Approved (Aug. 2010) Preventive Medicine Research Institute ("PMRI") as his inspirations.
Clinton said, "I went on essentially a plant-based diet. I live on beans, legumes, vegetables, fruits... I drink a protein supplement every morning, no dairy, I drink almond milk mixed in with fruit, and a protein powder. It changed my whole metabolism and I lost 24 pounds, and I got back to basically what I weighed in high school."
Clinton highlighted his concern over a worsening heart condition as the driving force behind his decision to make a radical change in his eating habits. "I did it because after I had this stent put in, I realized that even though it happens quite often that after bypass surgery you lose the veins, because they're thinner and weaker than arteries, the truth is that it clogged up, which means that the cholesterol was still causing buildup in my vein that was part of my bypass. I didn't want it to happen again. So I did all this research and it says that 82% of the people since 1986 who have gone on a plant-based, no dairy, no meat of any kind -- I eat very little fish -- 82% of the people who have done that have begun to heal themselves. Their arterial blockage cleans up, the calcium deposit around their heart breaks up," he said in a televised interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.
Bill Clinton has FINALLY addressed "THE CAUSE" of his heart problems as the medical profession refuses to Heal & Cure our ailments as medical revenues would be endangered.
Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. stated the following: “When people learn to eat a plant based diet they can eliminate heart disease & cancer it could inaugurate a seismic revolution in our health. Other diseases that can be 80% resolved with a plant based diet include: obesity, hypertension, stroke, heart attacks, gall stones, diverticulitis, asthma, osteoporosis, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and a marked decrease in the common western cancers of breast, prostate, colon, endometrial, ovarian, & pancreatic”. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., who was a researcher & clinician at the Cleveland Clinic for 35+ years & wrote a VERY important book – “Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease”.
Bill Clinton is on a version of my Plant Based Diet. My Cancer Diet is MORE strict so as to build up Immune Systems & "BEAT CANCER"!
Dr. Esselstyn's Heart Diet, that Bill Clinton is on, is designed to clear out arteries, veins & related. see this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wZendyXhU4
Although the cardio-vascular benefits of a plant-based, vegan diet have been known for quite some time from the work of Doctors Caldwell B. Esselstyn in Cleveland and Dean Ornish out in California, as The China Study clearly shows, a plant-based diet is our best protection against many forms of degenerative and chronic disease. There are also many environmental and ethical reasons to go vegan.
Health Benefits of the Bill Clinton Diet
From a purely health perspective vegetables, fruits and other plant foods are rich sources of antioxidant nutrients (like vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and other carotenoids) that may protect our cells from damage by cancer-causing agents, halting the earliest processes that lead to cancer. In addition, a colorful plate full of both raw and cooked fruits and vegetables contain thousands of phytochemicals (natural substances in plants, like indoles, isoflavones and polyphenols) that appear to protect against cancer in a variety of ways.
http://www.vegsource.com/news/2011/08/dr-essesltyn-on-sanjay-guptas-cnn-special-video.html
In addition to fighting cancer and heart disease, a great deal of research has shown that eating a diet of whole grains, beans, soy foods, fruits (not with cancer NO sugar of any kind) and vegetables and avoiding animal products protects the body against stroke, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, birth defects and most other illnesses. Soluble fiber from grains and legumes may help lower blood cholesterol. Antioxidants in plant foods may help prevent cataracts, and carotenoids specifically appear to prevent deterioration of the retina of the eye. Esselstyn's Diet rules to live by that former Pres. Bill Clinton adopted.

• No meat, poultry, fish, dairy products or oils (incl. Olive Oil)

• Eat vegetables (except avocado), fruits, legumes and whole grain products (Plant Based Diet).

His Web site: Heartattackproof.com, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. has a natural way to heal patients from the nation's No. 1 heart hospital and demeaning angioplasty, stents, etc. Invasive treatment is a mainstay of cardiac care, and it pbeen affiliated with the hospital for 40 yearsays the bills. It's also what's wrong with medicine, says the retired Cleveland Clinic surgeon who has

.The Book Behind Bill Clinon's Life-Changing Plant Based Diet

Dr. Esselstyn has invested Major Time & Energy and in effect turned his life's work to demonstrating that heart disease doesn't need to exist in the 1st place. And if it does, it can be reversed. The remedy is a Plant-based Diet, he continually says.

- Learn to live with no meat, no fish, no dairy or oils of any kind, and make yourself "heart-attack proof."

- Most doctors would agree a strict vegetarian diet is good for the heart. But the idea that a diet free of animal products and fat can cure the No. 1 killer in America is still a controversial view among doctors.

- Drug cos are in fierce competition to find a cholesterol drug that does what Esselstyn argues can be done better through diet. The call to attack artery-clogging plaque naturally is a challenge to the medical profession and an unspoken threat to the bottom line of the medical industry. Our Immune Systems is what Dr. Esselstyn says will be the WNNERS. ( We all wholeheartedly agree)

Dr. Esselstyn provided his message to all comers, and now has been on CNN's Wolf Blitzer with former pres. Bill Clinton (and Dr. Dean Ornish) who adopted his Plant Based Diet. Clinton is now at his High Scholl weight and feels better than he has in MANY years. Our bodies are real miracles - Especially - IF we provide the right fuels for them to operate EFFICIENTLY !

Esselstyn, while still in a white lab coat, told MANY assembled in Clinic classrooms that treating heart disease with stents, statins and other expensive invasive methods is not the answer. He strongly recommended that all medical people & others recognize and accept that the body, given the right fuel, can restore coronary arteries damaged by the fatty Western diet.

Why utilize a stent etc. when the right diet (Plant Based Organic) will do?

Esselstyn, a robust 6-foot-3 former Olympic gold medalist, has outlined the specifics of the human heart along with thespecifics of the heart's plumbing system to convince skeptics. He has shown X-rays of arteries belonging to patients who undertook his nutrition program. The X-rays showed vessels narrowed by disease that appeared to open after patients shunned burgers and fries, etc. for greens and grains.

"Why do you have to have an operation or stent?" Esselstyn has repeatedly asked rhetorically. "Your body can do this so simply."

Esselstyn and his wife, Ann, have followed a plant-based, oil-free diet for more than 26 years. He has studied a number of heart patients under his counsel during that time and reports their remarkable success in an EXCELLENT book called "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease." Buy it Bill Clinton did!

He lives in Pepper Pike and is part of a small fraternity of prevention activists who say a vegetarian diet can protect the heart, the best known of whom is best-selling author Dr. Dean Ornish. Both were on with Bill Clinton & CNN's Wolf Blitzer discussing Bill's weight loss and good color.

"What really keeps me on fire about this is we have an epidemic of disease in this country that doesn't need to exist," Esselstyn said in an interview. "It's so ridiculously simplistic to turn around this epidemic, it's scary."

A Quality Plant Based Diet calls for meaningful change and some discipline.Simplistic perhaps, but also a bit demanding. The Esselstyn diet means never saying you ate "pretty good," or you only had a little ice cream.
Dr. Esselstyn resume:

A Great man - Dr. Caldwell B. Essesltyn, Jr.
• Age: 74

• Member of Yale rowing team that won gold medal in 1956 Olympics.

• U.S. Army surgeon during the Vietnam War.

• Married to Ann Crile Esselstyn (below), granddaughter of Cleveland Clinic co-founder Dr. George Crile.

• Cleveland Clinic surgeon for 31 years.

• Quote: "I became disillusioned with a lot of what we were doing in medicine. No matter how many operations I did, I wasn't doing anything for the next victim." Every forkful of fat, he says, causes an immediate biochemical assault on the endothelium, the lining of the arteries. White blood cells collect there, gobbling up bad cholesterol and creating fatty deposits over time. For many people, especially those who smoke or have other risk factors, accumulation of plaque is a time bomb for a coronary event.

It might take something like that to convince an average meat-eater to adopt the Esselstyn diet. Even then, you wonder how many people at a heart attack survivors' convention would line up at his table.

Many drs might agree with Esselsytn, but few are likely to push the no-mercy diet on patients, simply because current medial thought tends to STILL consider a quality diet to be unachievable.

"This diet is looked at as extreme as you can get, so many physicians instead of going to the extreme, go somewhere in the middle," said Dr. Joe Crowe, director of the breast center at the Clinic. Crowe has followed Esselstyn's program since he suffered a heart attack at age 44 in 1996. He learned a new way of eating and said that once your taste buds adjust, you stop liking the taste of fat. You learn which restaurants to eat at and how to navigate social functions, which for Crowe involves moving stuff around the plate "so it looks like I've eaten something." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wZendyXhU4

He was lean and healthy, with no sign of heart trouble when his heart attack struck. He learned that the lower third of a main artery leading to the front of his heart was significantly narrowed. They call this vessel the "widow maker." Crowe wasn't a candidate for surgical intervention, so he turned to Esselstyn. 2 1/2 years later, an angiogram showed the diseased artery was normal.

A need for large-scale trials by an entrenched medical system? Take a look at Dr. Neil Pinckney -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wZendyXhU4

Esselstyn has meticulously followed more than a dozen patients with advanced coronary disease who adopted his program. He writes in his book that patients saw cholesterol levels plummet and their angina disappear. After five years, 11 patients who underwent follow-up angiograms had stopped or reversed progression of the disease, he wrote. "Patients with heart disease and their families, their greatest fear is when the next shoe is going to drop," Esselstyn said. "This is a very powerful gift they have given themselves and their families."

He counts cardiologists among those who have come knocking at his door for help. But he is first to admit he has not won a large number of believers at the Clinic. He tiptoes carefully on the subject of how his mantra plays there as many careers are at stake.

Many still, even chairmans of cardiovascular medicine at our medical hospitals, say Esselstyn's premise is unproven because there have not been a rigorous study to show whether diet alone can reverse coronary disease. "This is the reality," these so called experts say. "We need to do the large-scale trials that somebody has to fund." Most Drs.tell patients NOT to go out and buy a book and decide that's what you're going to do. I STRONGLY suggest that WE ALL must learn to rely on the Power of our bodies, NOT on a revenue driven medical system.

As a retired Investment Banker that financed MANY firms (All revenue & profit driven), I see the American medical system as a "strongly revenue driven, out-of-control monster". It seems that "healong & Curing", by Natural Quality Diet means is a dangerous Revenue destructive concept. As America ranks 47th in Longevity in the world, ranks BADLY in healthcare along with Staggering costs, the USA medical system MUST CHANGE NOW ! They are a MAJOR reason the United States is facing dangerous financial debts, along with Wall St. and Politicians. Our Healthcare system is a "No Heal- No Cure" human Disaster.

Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. is "One of the MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE of the past 20 years".

His willingness to "Buck an entrenched and damaging system is without parrallel, and I SALUTE him as a man of Honor, Integrity and Strength Commited to "Make A Difference" in the world ! He is enhancing the quality of Life of Millions of Americans, as well as others worldwide.

Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr also was a creator of http://recumbutt.wordpress.com/2011/05/29/forks-over-knives/ the critically important "Forks Over Knives" documentary:

What if one simple change could save you from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer? For decades, that question has fascinated a small circle of impassioned doctors and researchers—and now, their life-changing research is
making headlines in the hit documentary Forks Over Knives. Their answer? Eat a whole-foods, plant-based diet—it could save your life. It may overturn most of the diet advice you’ve heard—but the experts behind Forks Over Knives aren't afraid to make waves. In his book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn explained that eating meat, dairy, and oils injures the lining of our blood vessels, causing heart disease, heart attack, or stroke.
In The China Study, Dr. Colin Campbell revealed how cancer and other diseases skyrocket when eating meat and dairy is the norm—and plummet when a traditional plant-based diet persists. And more and more experts are adding their voices to the cause: There is nothing else you can do for your health that can match the benefits of a plant-based diet. Now, as Forks Over Knives is introducing more people than ever before to the plant-based way to health, this accessible guide provides the information you need to adopt and maintain a plant-based diet. Esselstyn's wife, Ann, who is granddaughter of The Cleveland Clinic co-founder George Crile, is also an important partner in his efforts. She authored a chapter in the book and contributed a volume of recipes, from banana french toast to veggie stuffed peppers. Ann also asks people she meets right off what they ate for lunch. Together they counsel patients in their home, hosting four-hour sessions on how to shop, cook and eat in ways that most people never contemplated. Ann accompanied her husband on his recent Clinic lecture, cradling a bundle of leafy greens to demonstrate the art a Plant Based Diet.

7 Health Benefits Of Coffee

7 Health Benefits Of Coffee

Coffee's 7 Health BenefitsThe Huffington Post - Healthy Living Brief
Oh, coffee. The a.m. savior, dispenser of energy and the reason why many of us are able to get through the first parts of our days without looking like zombies. But studies show that we may be benefitting from more than just the energy-boosting caffeine in coffee -- we might also be reaping its cancer-preventing and depression-lowering effects, just to name a couple.Of course, as with all good things, moderation is key -- excessive coffee consumption is associated with cardiovascular problems, including an increased heart rate or blood pressure and irregular heartbeats, Harvard Health Publications reports. And all that caffeine can become addictive. Experts tend to agree that the good largely outweighs the bad for most people, but remember to consume in moderation (and skip calorie-heavy add-ins like sugar and cream). The caffeine in coffee could actually help you to spot grammar errors, according to a new study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. Researchers found that caffeine helped students to correct errorsin subject-verb agreement and verb tense, MSNBC reported. However, the caffeine still didn't seem to make a difference at identifying misspelled words -- sorry.
Women who drink a few cups of caffeinated coffee have a lower risk of depression than women who don't drink any coffee, according to a Harvard study. That research, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, shows that women who drink two to three cups of coffee a day have a 15% lower risk, while women who drink four or more cups of coffee a day have a 20% lower risk. Study research Dr. Albert Ascherio told HuffPost earlier that "caffeine is known to affect the brain," because it "modulates the release of mood transmitters." "I'm not saying we're on the path to discovering a new way to prevent depression," he said. "But I think you can be reassured that if you are drinking coffee, it is coming out as a positive thing." Coffee Could Save Your Brain... Well, maybe. A study in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease suggests that there's something in coffee -- though researchers have yet to determine what exactly that "something" is -- interacts with caffeine to boost the levels of granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GCSF), a growth factor that seems to be able to fight off Alzheimer's disease in mice. Coffee Could Lower Men's Prostate Cancer RiskA Harvard School of Public Health study shows that men who drink six cups of coffee a day have a 60% decreased chance of developing a dangerous form of prostate cancer, as well as a 20% decreased chance of developing any other kinds of prostate cancer. The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, also shows that just drinking just some coffee a day -- just one to 3 cups -- could still cut prostate cancer risk by 30%.The amount of coffee needed in the study is equivalent to about 4 or5 cups of coffee for humans. Researchers said GCSF likely has this effect because it causes stem cells in the bone marrow to come into the brain and remove the beta-amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease. It also has a role in forming brain cell connections and creating new brain neurons, researchers said. Coffee Could Ward Off The World's Most Common CancerNew research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research conference shows that coffee could help to ward off basal cell carcinoma, the most common cancer in the world.Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that women who drink three or more cups of caffeinated coffee a day have a 20% lower risk of the skin cancer, while men had a 9% lower risk. Decaf coffee didn't seem to have the same protective effect -- so "our study shows that the inverse association with BCC appears due to caffeine, not other components in the coffee consumption," study researcher Fengju Song, Ph.D., earlier told HuffPost.Drinking coffee is assoc. with a lower Type 2 diabetes risk

Coffee Could Protect You From Type 2 Diabetes

Drinking coffee is associated with a lower Type 2 diabetes risk, with more coffee consumption linked to a greater decrease in risk, according to an Archives of Internal Medicine review of studies from 2009. In that review, researchers looked at data from more than 450,000 people in 18 studies, and

found that for every extra cup of coffee drank a day, a person’s risk of Type 2 diabetes

decreased by 7%. However, researchers cautioned that “the putative protective effects of these beverages warrant further investigation in randomized trials.”
Coffee Could Decrease Parkinson’s Risk

Coffee Could Decrease Parkinson’s Risk
Drinking a few cups of coffee a day could lower the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease by as much as 25%, according to a study published last year in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

In that review of studies, which was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, researchers examined 26 studies that involved 125,000 British people, to find that 2 or 3 cups of coffee seemed to have the optimal effect, The Telegraph reported.
